GRACIEMAG and the Worlds

Primeiro Mundial no JG

GRACIEMAG and the Jiu-Jitsu Worlds are practically synonymous. Ever sincethe May 1996 issue hit the streets - while still in the Jornal Gracie (“Gracie Newspaper”) format, with spectacular photos by Ricardo Azoury, and with coverage of the first World Championship -, the greatest Jiu-Jitsu magazine and the most exceptional gentle art competition have walked ventured forth together.

Over these 15 years since the first event, there have been 14 covers (the 15th is soon to come) and endless tales of victory, defeat, celebration and drama. It was the pages of GRACIEMAG that offered up all the details behind the historic finals of the absolute division, from Bitetti vs Gurgel, in 1997, to Roger vs Rominho, in 2009.

It was also on those very pages that you shook from excitement with the most superlative images captured by our aces behind the lens. The cover of GRACIEMAG 31, with coverage of the ’99 World Championship, is a splendid example. It was in GRACIEMAG that you read the heartfelt statements from the stoic fighters who even in the heat of battle still had the quick thinking and reasoning to utter immortal sayings. For example? “It’s 1 to 1, but I have an arm of advantage,” spat Roger Gracie, shortly after losing to Jacaré in 2004, in the famous final of the hyper-extended armbar. The reptile (“Jacaré” means alligator in Portuguese) would retort a year later, after winning yet again, by a score of 2 to 1.
